WebbIt sounds like the issue you are running into is the difference between gymballed and fixed weapons. The slot size on a ship reflects the maximum sized weapon you could fit there as a fixed (non moving) weapon. If you add a gymbal puck (lets you move the guns around independent of the ship) this reduces the size of the gun you can put there by 1.

WebbShip destruction does not guarantee the loss of all non insured weapons/components. You can recover all equipment from a lost and not destroyed ship.
