WebKYW-Radio became an even more vital component of the Greater Cleveland broadcasting scene beginning in the spring of 1959. It began when that station sponsored an impromptu record hop on May 22nd. Its proceeds went towards the Vince Wayne Memorial Fund. That popular singing star had died in a freak accident the previous day.[1] WebLIFE IN CLEVELAND KYW announced it would keep its NBC network programs, and the station also kept some of the former WTAM on-air staff, although sometimes in different shifts. For example, afternoon host Bill Mayer now hosted the morning show. Another holdover was popular women’s show host Mildred Funnell, who had joined WTAM in 1930.
