WebJun 13, 2024 · It is estimated that there are about 70 cisterns in Istanbul, although their exact number is not known. These 70 cisterns are thought to be from the Byzantine period. The cistern, located 500 feet (150 m) southwest of Ayasofya on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian.
