I'm thinking later in '67 GM went away from this format. Clear as mud? I know the history of my block and it came from factory as a 427. Later 396's could only go to a 402. Thom

I put 100k miles or so on the 60 over 396 I had in my old pickup. 400 hp is easy, 500 hp not so easy. Yes but you could hit 435-450 with modern heads.
